Junto con saludarlo, recibí correo de Samar Malek, profesora de la Academia Naval de Estados Unidos, el cual transcribo: HI CDR Arancibia, I would like for myself and my students to have a real-world experience where we can work for a disaster relief/humanitarian aid mission. That could take the form of us building infrastructure or visiting a site where we could view the buildings/shelters/roads and discuss the design challenges and solutions with the engineers and the local population who use them. My students will design and build a deployable gridshell. Gridshells are shell structures built by taking straight wooden beams and bending them into a curved shape. The link I provide above is a more complicated gridshell, but these kinds of structures can be down-scaled and simplified to fit disaster relief situations. Regardless of whether my students will get that real-world experience, they will still conduct interviews with aid workers, military personnel and the population they serve all to understand the design challenges and constraints and the needs of the people. In terms of the best time of year, its a bit tricky and depends on the length of the trip. We have a couple long weekends September 2-5, or October 7-10 or I can see if students would be willing to go during their Thanksgiving break (Nov 24-27) or Christmas break or Spring Break March 11-19. What kind of opportunities do you think could exist? Thank you, Samar |
